Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Phyllanthus amarus leaf extract is a botanical extract derived from the leaves of the tropical herb Phyllanthus amarus (family Phyllanthaceae/Euphorbiaceae). It contains bioactive phytochemicals including lignans (such as phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin), flavonoids (such as quercetin and rutin), and ellagitannins. The extract is traditionally used for hepatoprotection, antiviral activity (particularly against hepatitis B virus), and anti-inflammatory effects. Standardized formulations, such as PHYLLPRO, have been clinically evaluated for the relief of alcohol-induced hangover symptoms and protection against oxidative stress. Additionally, preclinical research has demonstrated its antibacterial potential against multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens, including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus, potentially through the inhibition of bacterial DNA gyrase B.
