Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Phyllanthus emblica is a deciduous tree native to India and the Middle East. Its fruit—commonly known as amla or Indian gooseberry—is widely used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. The fruit is rich in vitamin C and polyphenols including tannins and flavonoids. It exhibits antioxidant activity by scavenging free radicals; anti-inflammatory effects through modulation of inflammatory cytokines; antihyperlipidemic action via inhibition of cholesterol synthesis enzymes like HMG-CoA reductase; antidiabetic effects by reducing insulin resistance; hepatoprotective properties; antimicrobial activity; and potential antitumor actions through cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptosis in cancer cells[1][3][5]. Phyllanthus emblica is also used as an ingredient in multi-herb formulations such as Triphala. Clinical evidence supports its use for improving lipid profiles (hyperlipidemia/dyslipidemia) with some data suggesting benefits for diabetes management[1][2]. Its mechanisms are attributed to its high content of antioxidants (ascorbic acid/vitamin C), polyphenols (emblicanin A/B), flavonoids and tannins[3][5].
