Overview

Phyllanthus emblica extract, derived from the fruit of the Indian gooseberry tree, is a botanical product containing a complex mixture of bioactive compounds including tannins, gallic acid, and polyphenols. Initially developed by the University of Guadalajara, it is currently being investigated for its potential in treating metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes and hyperlipidemia. The extract exhibits a multi-targeted mechanism of action, including the inhibition of digestive enzymes like alpha-glucosidase, activation of insulin signaling pathways (specifically Akt and AMPK phosphorylation), and regulation of lipid metabolism through PPAR-alpha. Preclinical studies have also demonstrated its antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as its ability to alleviate diabetic nephropathy.
