Overview

Physalis alkekengi polysaccharide is a natural substance extracted from the Chinese lantern plant (*Physalis alkekengi L.*), which is under investigation for its potential therapeutic effects in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Preclinical studies in T2DM mouse models suggest it exerts hypoglycemic effects by reducing fasting blood glucose, improving glucose tolerance, and decreasing insulin resistance. Its proposed mechanisms of action include the inhibition of α-glucosidase, regulation of blood lipid levels (reducing total cholesterol and triglycerides), and enhancement of the antioxidant capacity in the liver and pancreas. Furthermore, research indicates it may modulate gut health by increasing the expression of G protein-coupled receptor 43 (GPR43) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) in the colon and pancreas.
