Overview

Physiologic solution, specifically 0.9% sodium chloride (NaCl), was utilized as the placebo control in a Phase II randomized, double-blind trial conducted by the Università Politecnica delle Marche. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of IgM-enriched immunoglobulins (Pentaglobin) on sublingual microcirculation in patients diagnosed with severe sepsis or septic shock. In this clinical context, the solution was administered intravenously at a dosage of 5 mL/kg per day for a duration of 72 hours. While it serves as a standard isotonic crystalloid for fluid maintenance, its role in this specific trial was to provide a volume-matched comparator to assess the efficacy of the active immunoglobulin therapy.
