Overview

Physiological serum, commonly known as normal saline (0.9% sodium chloride), is a sterile, isotonic solution of sodium chloride in water. It is widely used in clinical practice for fluid resuscitation, electrolyte replenishment, and as a vehicle for the intravenous administration of various medications. In the context of clinical research, it frequently serves as a placebo control. Specifically, in a Phase 2 pilot study conducted at Hospital Universitari Son Dureta (now Hospital Universitari Son Espases) in Spain, physiological serum was used as the control arm to evaluate the efficacy of intravenous L-alanyl-L-glutamine dipeptide supplementation in trauma ICU patients. The study aimed to determine if glutamine could reduce infection rates and mortality in this population, though results showed no significant benefit over the physiological serum control.
