Physiological water, also known as sterile saline, is an inactive substance used as a placebo control in clinical research. In a study led by University Hospital, Ghent, it was used as the comparator against botulinum toxin (Botox) for the treatment of localized provoked vulvodynia. The intervention involved the infiltration of 3 mL of physiological water into the vestibulum vaginae at six specific sites every six weeks. As a placebo, it lacks an active pharmaceutical ingredient or a specific biological target, serving instead to facilitate blinding and provide a baseline for evaluating the therapeutic efficacy and safety of the active treatment in patients who have not responded to standard care.
