Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PHySIOMIC (Polydopamine Hybridized Self-assembled Iron Oxide Mussel Inspired Clusters) is a biodegradable, superparamagnetic iron oxide-based contrast agent designed for the non-invasive detection and imaging of microthrombi. Developed by researchers at INSERM, CHU Caen, and the Blood and Brain Institute (BB@C Caen Normandie) in collaboration with CSL Behring, PHySIOMIC consists of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIO) clustered within a polydopamine matrix. The polydopamine coating mimics the adhesive properties of mussels, facilitating the formation of a protein corona (specifically involving fibrinogen) in the bloodstream that targets microthrombi. PHySIOMIC is being investigated as an imaging agent for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) to visualize microvascular thrombosis in conditions such as acute ischemic stroke and pulmonary embolism.
