Overview

This experimental toothpaste formulation, developed by GSK, is a multi-component topical dentifrice designed for the prevention of dental caries and the improvement of oral hygiene. It contains sodium fluoride (1150 ppm) as the primary anti-caries agent to promote enamel remineralization and inhibit demineralization. Phytate (inositol hexaphosphate) is included at concentrations up to 0.85% to provide enhanced extrinsic stain removal and prevention through calcium chelation. Zinc chloride (0.3%) is incorporated to inhibit oral malodour by neutralizing volatile sulfur compounds and providing antimicrobial activity. Sodium citrate (0.5%) serves as a buffering agent to maintain the formulation's stability and efficacy. The combination was evaluated in randomized, in situ clinical studies to ensure that the addition of phytate and zinc did not interfere with the fluoride-mediated remineralization process.
