Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Phytosomal silymarin (commonly known by the brand name Siliphos) is a highly bioavailable formulation of silymarin—specifically silybin, the primary active flavonolignan of milk thistle (*Silybum marianum*)—complexed with phospholipids (primarily phosphatidylcholine). Developed by Indena, this phytosome technology significantly enhances the absorption and systemic bioavailability of silybin compared to conventional milk thistle extracts. Phytosomal silymarin is widely utilized as a hepatoprotective and antioxidant nutraceutical. It has been investigated in clinical trials for various conditions, including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), hepatitis C, and as an adjunctive therapy in oncology (such as prostate, breast, and lung cancers) due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic, and chemopreventive properties.
