Overview

PIC20 is a synthetic naphthoquinone-derived small molecule developed by researchers at the Federal University of Espirito Santo in Brazil. It was rationally designed as a potential antineoplastic agent to target multiple cellular pathways, including polyamine biosynthesis and metabolism, with the goal of bypassing drug resistance in cancer cells. In preclinical in vitro studies, PIC20 demonstrated significant activity against the OVCAR3 ovarian cancer cell line, which is known for chemoresistance, achieving a 70% reduction in cellular metabolic viability with an IC50 of 53.1 μM. The compound is part of a series of novel naphthoquinone derivatives being investigated for the treatment of lethal gynecological malignancies like ovarian cancer.
