Overview

Picamilon (nicotinoyl-GABA) is a synthetic nootropic and anxiolytic compound developed in 1969 by the All-Union Research Institute of Vitamins in the Soviet Union. It is a dietary supplement in some jurisdictions and a prescription drug in Russia. Chemically, it is a conjugate of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and nicotinic acid (niacin). This structure allows the molecule to cross the blood-brain barrier, a feat GABA cannot achieve on its own. Once inside the central nervous system, picamilon is hydrolyzed into its constituent parts. The released GABA acts on GABA receptors to produce anxiolytic and calming effects, while the nicotinic acid acts as a potent vasodilator, improving cerebral circulation and oxygenation. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of cerebrovascular diseases, anxiety disorders, and depression.
