Overview

Picea pungens pollen is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the blue spruce (also known as Colorado spruce). It is a biologic product used in the United States for both the diagnosis and treatment of spruce pollen-induced allergic diseases, such as allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and asthma. For diagnostic purposes, the extract is typically used in skin prick or intradermal testing to identify IgE-mediated sensitivity. For therapeutic use, it is employed in allergen immunotherapy (hyposensitization), where gradually increasing doses are administered to the patient to induce clinical tolerance. The extract contains various proteins and allergens that interact with the immune system to modulate the allergic response. It was first approved by the FDA in 1967.
