Overview
Picloxydine is a bisbiguanide antiseptic and antibacterial agent primarily used in ophthalmic solutions for the treatment of superficial ocular infections and trachoma. It is structurally similar to chlorhexidine and exhibits broad-spectrum bactericidal or bacteriostatic activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Its mechanism of action involves disruption of bacterial cell membranes by interacting with the lipid bilayer, leading to leakage of cellular contents and bacterial death. Picloxydine is most commonly formulated as eye drops (notably under the brand name Vitabact) for topical use in ophthalmology[1][3][4][6].
