Picotamide is a small molecule antiplatelet drug with a dual mechanism of action. It functions as a thromboxane synthase inhibitor, reducing the production of thromboxane A2 (TXA2), a potent vasoconstrictor and promoter of platelet aggregation. Additionally, Picotamide acts as a thromboxane A2 receptor antagonist, blocking the effects of TXA2 at the receptor level. This dual action effectively decreases platelet aggregation and vasoconstriction, thereby lowering the risk of thrombus formation. It was developed by Simes S.p.A. and is used in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases, including clinical arterial thrombosis and peripheral arterial disease.
