Overview

Picralima nitida fruit-rind extract is a botanical extract derived from the fruit rind of the West African tree *Picralima nitida* (commonly known as Akuamma). The extract contains several active indole alkaloids, including akuammine, pseudo-akuammigine, akuammidine, and picraline. It has been traditionally used in West African folk medicine and is being investigated for its antiplasmodial, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. Preclinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy against *Plasmodium berghei* and *Plasmodium falciparum* infections, as well as its ability to modulate pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduce oxidative stress. The alkaloids within the extract primarily target mu- and kappa-opioid receptors, although their analgesic potency is weaker than traditional opioids.
