Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Picroside II is an iridoid glycoside and a primary bioactive constituent of the traditional Chinese medicinal plant *Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora* (Hu Huang Lian). It is primarily recognized for its hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities. In the context of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), picroside II has been shown to alleviate hepatic steatosis and improve liver function by targeting the cuproptosis pathway. Specifically, it downregulates the expression of ferredoxin 1 (FDX1) and lipoic acid synthase (LIAS), which inhibits copper deposition and restores the lipoylation of dihydrolipoamide S-acetyltransferase (DLAT). Beyond liver disease, it has been studied for its potential neuroprotective effects in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury and other inflammatory conditions.
