Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pilobuc is a proprietary buccal insert formulation of pilocarpine, a small molecule muscarinic receptor agonist. Developed by Cytokine PharmaSciences and licensed to Marillion Pharmaceuticals, the product utilizes a hydrogel polymer technology to provide controlled and sustained release of the drug directly to the buccal mucosa. It is designed for the treatment of xerostomia (dry mouth) resulting from Sjögren's syndrome, radiotherapy for head and neck cancer, or medication-induced salivary gland dysfunction. By utilizing the buccal route of administration, Pilobuc aims to deliver therapeutic levels of pilocarpine while reducing the systemic side effects, such as sweating and gastrointestinal upset, commonly associated with oral pilocarpine tablets.
