Overview

Pilose antler extracts are bioactive preparations derived from the unossified, fast-growing antlers of deer (commonly sika deer, *Cervus nippon* Temminck), widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). They contain a complex mixture of peptides, proteins, and other biomolecules, most notably pilose antler peptide (PAP). These extracts exhibit **anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, and anti-aging activities**. Reported mechanisms include modulation of several signaling pathways (such as AMPK/Sirt1/NF-κB/NLRP3, TGF-β/SMAD, AKT, and Wnt) that mediate inflammation, oxidative stress, and tissue regeneration. Primary research suggests applications in **depression, psoriasis, heart disease, and androgenetic alopecia**, but strong clinical evidence for many indications is lacking.
