PILV

PILV (Pneumococcal Inactivated Lyophilized Vaccine) is an inactivated whole-cell vaccine (WCV) candidate designed to provide broad-spectrum protection against *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. Developed by Inventprise in collaboration with PATH and supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the vaccine utilizes a gamma-irradiated, non-encapsulated strain of *S. pneumoniae* (specifically the Rx1AL- strain). Unlike traditional pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) that target specific capsular polysaccharides, PILV aims to induce immunity against a wide array of conserved surface proteins present across all serotypes. This approach potentially offers a more cost-effective and broader-spectrum alternative to existing vaccines, which are limited by serotype replacement. The vaccine is formulated as a lyophilized product to enhance thermal stability and facilitate distribution in low-resource settings without the need for a continuous cold chain.
