Overview

Pimethixene is a small molecule drug of the thioxanthene class with antihistamine and anticholinergic properties. It acts as an antagonist at histamine H1 receptor and muscarinic acetylcholine M2 receptor, and also displays high affinity for serotonin 5-HT2A and 5-HT2B receptors. Pimethixene was originally developed to treat hyperactivity, anxiety, sleep disorders, allergies, and has been used as a sedative agent in anesthesia as well as a bronchodilator. It is approved for use in Brazil (Muricalm) primarily for the treatment of bronchitis and dry cough in children older than two years. In France it was previously marketed in combination with pholcodine under the name Salvodex[1][2][3][4][6].
