Overview

Pinacidil is a cyanoguanidine small molecule antihypertensive drug that acts as an ATP-sensitive potassium channel opener in vascular smooth muscle cells. By increasing potassium permeability, it causes peripheral vasodilatation of arterioles and decreases peripheral vascular resistance, resulting in reduced blood pressure. Pinacidil was approved by the FDA in 1989 but has since been discontinued. It is classified as a guanidine derivative and was primarily indicated for the treatment of hypertension[1][2][4][5].
