Overview

Pinaverium is a spasmolytic agent primarily used for the symptomatic treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional disorders of the biliary tract. It is a quaternary ammonium compound that acts as an atypical calcium antagonist, specifically blocking voltage-dependent L-type calcium channels on gastrointestinal smooth muscle cells. This inhibition reduces smooth muscle contractions in the GI tract, leading to relief from symptoms such as abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. Pinaverium is not FDA-approved but is available in over 60 countries including Canada. It has minimal systemic absorption and acts locally within the gut[2][5][6][8].
