Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pinellia pedatisecta extract (PE) is a novel lipid-soluble botanical extract derived from the rhizome of *Pinellia pedatisecta* Schott, a traditional Chinese medicinal plant historically used for its anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties. Developed through a collaboration between the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (Chinese Academy of Sciences) and the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University, PE is being investigated as a research-stage antineoplastic agent, particularly for the treatment of cervical cancer. Its mechanism of action is multifaceted, involving the induction of apoptosis and necrosis in cancer cells, activation of the DNA damage response (DDR) pathway, and modulation of the tumor immune microenvironment. Specifically, PE has been shown to suppress tumor-associated dendritic cells (TADCs) by inhibiting SOCS1 signaling, thereby enhancing CD4+ and CD8+ T cell immune responses. Additionally, it exhibits synergistic cytotoxicity when combined with cisplatin by inhibiting the HPV E6/p53 signaling pathway, restoring p53 function, and upregulating pro-apoptotic proteins such as BAX and caspases.
