Pinoclav

Pinoclav is a combination antibiotic drug containing amoxicillin, a semi-synthetic beta-lactam antibiotic, and clavulanic acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Developed and marketed by the Indian pharmaceutical company Docventures Pharmaceuticals, Pinoclav is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. Amoxicillin works by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls, leading to cell lysis. Clavulanic acid acts as a suicide inhibitor of beta-lactamase enzymes, which are produced by certain bacteria to degrade beta-lactam antibiotics. By inhibiting these enzymes, clavulanic acid protects amoxicillin from degradation and extends its spectrum of activity to include many bacteria normally resistant to amoxicillin alone. The drug is available in multiple oral formulations, including tablets and pediatric syrups, and is indicated for conditions such as pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, otitis media, urinary tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections.
