Pinoxin is a hydrogen-donor modified superoxide dismutase (SOD) developed as a topical skin protective agent. It is designed to prevent radiation-induced skin injury by neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during radiotherapy. Superoxide dismutase is an enzyme that catalyzes the dismutation of the superoxide radical into ordinary molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. The modification with a hydrogen donor is intended to enhance its antioxidant capacity and stability. It has been studied in multicenter clinical trials led by Fudan University for patients undergoing radiation therapy to reduce the incidence of grade 2 or greater skin injury.
