Pinus banksiana pollen extract is a biological allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the jack pine tree (*Pinus banksiana*). It is primarily utilized as a diagnostic tool in clinical allergy testing, such as skin prick or intradermal tests, to identify individuals with hypersensitivity to jack pine pollen. The extract works by cross-linking allergen-specific IgE antibodies bound to mast cells and basophils in the skin, triggering the release of inflammatory mediators like histamine, which results in a visible wheal-and-flare reaction. Approved by the FDA in 1974 under BLA 102223, it is also used in allergen immunotherapy (desensitization) to reduce allergic symptoms over time in sensitized patients.
