Pinus contorta pollen, derived from the Lodgepole Pine, is utilized primarily as an allergenic extract for the diagnosis and treatment of Type I hypersensitivity reactions. In clinical practice, it is employed as a diagnostic tool in skin prick or intradermal testing to identify patients with specific sensitization to pine allergens. Therapeutically, it is used in allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT), where the administration of gradually increasing doses of the extract aims to induce immunological tolerance. The mechanism of action involves a complex modulation of the immune system, including the induction of regulatory T cells (Tregs), a shift from a Th2-dominated to a Th1-dominated cytokine profile, and the production of 'blocking' IgG4 antibodies that compete with IgE for allergen binding. Beyond its pharmaceutical use, Pinus contorta pollen is also marketed as a dietary supplement, often cited for its nutrient density and purported effects on hormonal balance, although these claims are less rigorously supported by clinical evidence than its use in allergy.
