Overview

Pinus densiflora whole refers to the entire plant or its major parts (such as needles, bark, and pollen) of the Japanese or Korean red pine. Extracts from Pinus densiflora are used in traditional medicine and as dietary supplements. The plant contains a variety of bioactive compounds including polyphenols, flavonoids, monoterpenes (like alpha- and beta-pinene), sesquiterpenes (such as germacrene D), emodin, piceid, and resveratrol[5][8]. Pine needle oil derived from this species has demonstrated antibacterial, antioxidant, antifungal, wound-healing activities in animal and in vitro studies; it is also marketed for aromatherapy[5]. Pinus densiflora pollen extract has shown immune-enhancing effects by increasing cytokine production via activation of Nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) signaling pathways[6]. Bark extracts have been reported to lower blood pressure and exhibit neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties[8]. No clinical trials have established efficacy for any specific indication in humans.
