Overview

*Pinus palustris* pollen extract is a biologic allergen extract derived from the pollen of the longleaf pine tree (*Pinus palustris*). It is primarily utilized in clinical settings for the diagnosis and treatment of IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reactions specifically triggered by longleaf pine pollen. As a diagnostic tool, the extract is used in percutaneous (skin prick) or intradermal testing to identify sensitization in patients with allergic rhinitis or asthma. As a therapeutic agent, it is employed in allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT), also known as desensitization. The mechanism involves the administration of gradually increasing doses of the allergen to modulate the patient's immune response, typically shifting the cytokine profile from a Th2-dominated allergic response to a Th1/Treg-mediated regulatory response, thereby inducing long-term immunological tolerance.
