Pinus taeda pollen extract is a non-standardized allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the Loblolly Pine (*Pinus taeda*). Developed and manufactured by Greer Laboratories, it is primarily utilized as a diagnostic tool to identify allergic sensitivities in patients suspected of having pollen-related respiratory conditions. The extract is administered via percutaneous (scratch/prick) or intradermal testing, where it works by cross-linking allergen-specific IgE antibodies on the surface of mast cells and basophils in sensitized individuals. This interaction triggers the release of histamine and other mediators, resulting in a visible wheal-and-flare reaction. While primarily diagnostic, such extracts can also be used in subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) to induce immunological tolerance.
