Overview
Pioglitazone is an oral antidiabetic medication belonging to the thiazolidinedione class. It is primarily used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Pioglitazone works by selectively activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPARγ) in adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, and liver, which increases insulin sensitivity and enhances glucose uptake while reducing hepatic glucose production. This mechanism helps lower blood sugar levels without increasing insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells. Pioglitazone is not indicated for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis[1][2][3][4].
