Sonias Combination Tablets LD is a fixed-dose combination (FDC) medication developed by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It contains two active ingredients with distinct and complementary mechanisms of action: pioglitazone and glimepiride. Pioglitazone is a thiazolidinedione that acts as a potent agonist for the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-gamma), which regulates the transcription of insulin-responsive genes involved in glucose and lipid metabolism, thereby improving insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues and reducing hepatic glucose output. Glimepiride is a second-generation sulfonylurea that stimulates insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells by binding to and blocking ATP-sensitive potassium (K-ATP) channels. The "LD" (Low Dose) formulation specifically provides a combination of 15 mg pioglitazone and 1 mg glimepiride. It is indicated for patients who have an insufficient glycemic response to pioglitazone monotherapy.
