pipazethate

Pipazethate is a non-narcotic, centrally acting oral antitussive agent primarily used for the symptomatic treatment of cough in both acute and chronic respiratory conditions. It acts by suppressing the excitability of the medullary cough center and also exerts peripheral effects on neural receptors in the respiratory tract. The drug has additional bronchodilatory and local anesthetic activities, which can help reduce airway resistance, especially in patients with bronchospasm. Its mechanism of action involves binding to the sigma-1 receptor (IC50 ~190 nM), which is believed to mediate its antitussive effect. Pipazethate was first launched in 1962 and remains more commonly used in developing countries[1][4][5][6][8].
