Overview
Pipemidic acid is a synthetic quinolone antibacterial agent, structurally related to piromidic and nalidixic acids, and classified as a pyridopyrimidine. It was introduced in 1979 for the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs), gastrointestinal, and biliary infections caused by susceptible gram-negative bacteria (including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and some gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus. Its mechanism of action involves inhibition of bacterial DNA gyrase (a type II topoisomerase), thereby blocking DNA replication and leading to bactericidal activity. Pipemidic acid was withdrawn from the European market following regulatory review but may still be available in other countries[2][4][6][7].
