Pipenzolate is a small molecule antimuscarinic (anticholinergic) agent primarily used to treat gastrointestinal motility disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, gastrointestinal spasms, flatulent dyspepsia, infantile colic, and functional gastrointestinal disorders. It acts as a smooth muscle relaxant by selectively inhibiting muscarinic acetylcholine receptors—particularly the M2 and M3 subtypes—thereby blocking the action of acetylcholine on smooth muscle in the gut. This results in reduced spasms and hypermotility of the gastrointestinal tract. Pipenzolate has also been studied for use in arrhythmia and peptic ulcer disease[1][3][4][5][6][7].
