Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pentocillin is a brand name for piperacillin sodium, a broad-spectrum ureidopenicillin antibiotic developed and marketed by FUJIFILM Toyama Chemical. It is indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including sepsis, pneumonia, and urinary tract infections caused by susceptible strains of Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Piperacillin exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, thereby inhibiting the final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. This leads to cell wall instability and subsequent bacterial cell lysis. Pentocillin is typically administered via intravenous or intramuscular injection and is widely used in clinical settings in Japan.
