Overview

This antibiotic regimen is a sequential therapy evaluated by Göteborg University for the treatment of acute uncomplicated appendicitis. The protocol initiates with an intravenous phase using piperacillin and tazobactam, a combination of a broad-spectrum penicillin and a beta-lactamase inhibitor, to address a wide range of aerobic and anaerobic pathogens. This is followed by an oral maintenance phase using ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone that inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis, and metronidazole, a nitroimidazole effective against anaerobic bacteria. This combination strategy is designed to provide comprehensive antimicrobial coverage as a non-surgical alternative to appendectomy in patients with uncomplicated disease, aiming for symptom resolution and avoidance of surgery.
