Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Piperacillin-Tazobactam Labatec is an approved combination antibiotic product developed and marketed by Labatec Pharma. It contains piperacillin, a broad-spectrum ureidopenicillin antibiotic, and tazobactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Piperacillin exerts its bactericidal activity by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which prevents the final stage of peptidoglycan cross-linking. Tazobactam protects piperacillin from degradation by irreversibly inhibiting many beta-lactamase enzymes that are commonly responsible for resistance to penicillins and cephalosporins. This combination is indicated for the treatment of various serious mixed bacterial infections, including lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bacterial sepsis, and infections in neutropenic patients. It is formulated as a powder for intravenous infusion.
