Piperazine is an anthelmintic drug primarily used to treat infections caused by common roundworms (ascariasis) and pinworms (enterobiasis). It works by acting as a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor agonist on the muscle membrane of susceptible worms, causing hyperpolarization of nerve endings and resulting in flaccid paralysis. The paralyzed worms are then expelled from the body through normal intestinal peristalsis. Piperazine is available only by prescription and has been in clinical use since 1953 for its antiparasitic properties[1][2][3]. It is not typically used for other indications but serves as a chemical scaffold in various pharmaceutical compounds[6].
