Overview

Pipradrol is a mild central nervous system stimulant and psychoactive agent that acts primarily as a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor. It was initially developed in the 1950s and marketed under the brand name Meratran, with additional formulations such as Alertonic Elixir. Pipradrol was originally used as an adjunct in the dietary management of obesity and for managing symptoms of dementia. Over time, it found use in treating depression, fatigue, narcolepsy, spasmodic torticollis, schizophrenia (particularly for negative symptoms), geriatric conditions, ADHD, and certain gynecological indications such as menopausal-associated depression. Its mechanism involves blocking the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine—leading to increased synaptic concentrations—and may also involve activation of D1 dopamine receptors. Unlike amphetamines, pipradrol does not significantly affect blood pressure or respiration nor does it suppress appetite or cause post-excitement depression. Due to concerns about abuse potential (though less than other stimulants), its use has been discontinued or restricted in many countries since the late 1970s but remains available for limited medical uses or research purposes in some regions[1][2][3][4][5][6].
