Overview

Piprozolin is a small molecule thiazolidine derivative that acts as a choleretic agent. Developed in the early 1970s, primarily by Gödecke AG, it was designed to stimulate the production and secretion of bile from the liver. The drug was investigated for its ability to increase both the volume and the solid content of bile, making it useful in the management of functional biliary disorders and chronic inflammatory conditions of the bile ducts, such as cholecystitis. Pharmacokinetic studies conducted in the 1970s demonstrated that piprozolin is effective following enteral administration, showing rapid absorption and metabolic conversion. While it was marketed in certain European regions, notably Germany under the brand name Probicil, it has since been largely superseded by newer therapeutic agents and is currently considered discontinued in most major pharmaceutical markets.
