Piracetam is a nootropic drug belonging to the racetams group, with the chemical name 2‑oxo‑1‑pyrrolidine acetamide. It is a cyclic derivative of gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) but does not act directly on GABA receptors. Its mechanism of action is not fully understood; it modulates neuronal and vascular function and influences cognitive processes without sedative or stimulant effects. Piracetam acts as a weak positive allosteric modulator of AMPA receptors, increases acetylcholine activity via muscarinic cholinergic receptors, may affect NMDA glutamate receptors, inhibits N-type calcium channels, and increases cell membrane permeability. It has been used for cognitive disorders such as dementia and memory impairment due to cerebrovascular disease or trauma, vertigo, cortical myoclonus, dyslexia in children, sickle cell anemia-related complications, and other neurological conditions[1][3][4][7].
