DEB-TACE (Drug-Eluting Bead Transarterial Chemoembolization) is a locoregional therapeutic intervention for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In the specific protocol developed and studied by the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, the procedure utilizes CalliSpheres, which are drug-eluting microspheres, loaded with the chemotherapeutic agent pirarubicin. The beads are delivered via the hepatic artery to the tumor site, where they provide a dual mechanism of action: mechanical occlusion of the tumor's blood supply (embolization) and the sustained, localized release of pirarubicin. This approach aims to achieve high intratumoral drug concentrations while minimizing systemic toxicity. The therapy is currently being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials for patients with unresectable large hepatocellular carcinoma, often in comparison or combination with other regional therapies like hepatic artery infusion chemotherapy (HAIC).
