Overview

Pirenzepine is a selective antimuscarinic (anticholinergic) agent primarily used for the treatment of peptic ulcers, including gastric and duodenal ulcers. It acts as an antagonist at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, with a preference for the M1 subtype. By inhibiting these receptors on gastric mucosa, pirenzepine decreases gastric acid and pepsin secretion, promoting ulcer healing and reducing recurrence risk. Unlike classic anticholinergics, it inhibits acid secretion at lower doses than those required to affect other organ systems (e.g., gastrointestinal motility or CNS). Pirenzepine is generally well tolerated; common side effects include dry mouth and blurred vision. It is usually administered orally before meals[1][2][4][5][7]. Developed by Boehringer Ingelheim.
