Piribedil is a synthetic non-ergot dopamine agonist primarily used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and other neurological conditions. It acts as a selective agonist at dopamine D2 and D3 receptors (with higher affinity for D3), and also exhibits antagonistic activity at alpha2-adrenergic receptors. Piribedil improves motor function by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain and is effective both as monotherapy or in combination with levodopa in early and advanced stages of Parkinson’s disease. Additional indications include management of restless legs syndrome, cognitive impairment (especially age-related memory deficits), peripheral vascular disease (intermittent claudication), dizziness in young patients, retinal ischemic manifestations, anhedonia/apathy in depression (off-label), and enhancement of working memory in older adults. Piribedil has minimal effects on serotonergic, cholinergic, or histaminergic systems[1][3][5][6].
