Pirlimycin is a semi-synthetic antibiotic of the lincosamide class, structurally related to clindamycin but with a six-membered ring replacing clindamycin’s five-membered ring. It is primarily used in veterinary medicine for the treatment of clinical and subclinical mastitis in lactating dairy cattle, especially those infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria such as *Staphylococcus aureus* and various *Streptococcus* species. Pirlimycin acts as a bacteriostatic agent by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit (specifically interacting with 23S rRNA), thereby inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through interference with peptidyl transferase activity and aminoacyl-tRNA binding.
