Overview

Pirodavir is a small molecule antiviral agent developed as a broad-spectrum inhibitor of picornaviruses, with potent activity against both group A and group B rhinovirus serotypes. It acts at an early stage of the viral replication cycle by binding to the viral capsid, thereby inhibiting virus adsorption and uncoating. Pirodavir was developed by Janssen Research Foundation as part of a series of pyridazine analogues and demonstrated high potency in vitro, reducing rhinovirus yield significantly in cell culture. While intranasal administration showed significant antiviral effects (notably reduced viral shedding), clinical trials did not demonstrate clear symptomatic benefit for naturally occurring rhinovirus colds[1][3][4][6].
