Overview

Piroxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the oxicam class used to relieve pain, inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and joint pain associated with conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It works primarily by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), which decreases the synthesis of prostaglandins—key mediators of pain and inflammation. Piroxicam also inhibits leukocyte migration to sites of inflammation and prevents thromboxane A2 formation by platelets. Its long half-life allows for once-daily dosing. Originally patented in 1968 by Pfizer and approved for medical use in 1979, it is now available as a generic medication under various brand names worldwide[1][3][5][6].
