Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Piroxicam-beta-cyclodextrin is an inclusion complex of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) piroxicam and the cyclic oligosaccharide beta-cyclodextrin. This formulation is specifically designed to enhance the solubility and dissolution rate of piroxicam, leading to more rapid gastrointestinal absorption and a faster onset of analgesic and anti-inflammatory action compared to standard piroxicam formulations. Like other NSAIDs, it works by non-selectively inhibiting the cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes, thereby blocking the synthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. It is primarily used for the symptomatic treatment of acute pain and chronic inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. Recent clinical research has also explored its preemptive use in managing tooth sensitivity associated with in-office dental bleaching procedures.
